Cultivating Settle was established in the autumn of 2007, by a group of local individuals and representatives of community organisations. Our objectives are:
- To promote and enhance the environment and quality of life in the town of Settle, primarily by the use of permanent sustainable planting for the benefit of residents, traders and visitors to the area.
- To promote community involvement by establishing inter-agency, co-operation between local authorities, voluntary and business centre organisation and others.
- To consider entering the Regional Britain in Bloom Competition, by committee agreement on a yearly basis.
In 2007, an initiative to improve the natural environment in Settle was taken and some target areas identified. Volunteers included local groups and students from Settle College. The results can be seen in the photos shown here. We purchased and erected a polytunnel, which is our Horticultural HQ. In 2007, we entered Yorkshire in Bloom for the first time and achieved a Silver in the 2007 competition.
Gallery on the Green
Cultivating Settle, with Upper Settle residents, have taken responsibility for the Upper Settle phone box, which will become (probably) the smallest art gallery in the world. To find out more visit the gallery website.
Composting project
We were awarded funding from the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust to install and publicise composting facilities for community use. See the project blog.
THE WOODLAND PROJECT
Working with Craven Conservation and with sponsorship from Craven Housing, we are planting a new woodland area, complete with bluebells and other
woodland plants, in the Millennium Gardens. Click here for a link to the project blog.
